Durov, who holds dual French and UAE citizenship, is under investigation in France for allegedly allowing criminal activities on Telegram due to insufficient moderation and lack of cooperation with law enforcement.
Telegram, based in Dubai, stated that Durov is committed to complying with EU laws and criticized the notion that the platform or its owner are responsible for platform misuse. The company also emphasized that Durov frequently travels in Europe.
Telegram, with nearly 1 billion users, is influential in Russia and former Soviet states. It has been scrutinized in Europe over security and data concerns.
The UAE has requested access from French officials to Pavel Durov, the detained founder of Telegram and a UAE citizen.
The UAE's foreign ministry stated that it is "closely following the case" and emphasized the urgency of providing him with "all necessary consular services."
