In this episode, Diego Carrete, known for being the first Chief Wellness Officer in the MENA banking domain, joins Anas Abbar, co-founder and CEO of 7awi Media Group, the UAE-based media house behind Inc. Arabia, for a conversation on how investing in employee wellbeing can become a strategic advantage for businesses. According to Carrete, realizing that potential requires organizations to rethink where workplace wellness sits within the business.
“Wellness currently is housed under human resources (HR) in many organizations around the globe, because it’s a function, it’s a title, that needs maturity—it’s [still] at an early stage,” Carrete explained. “In the ideal scenario, you want the wellness function close to operations, because you are able to link productivity, return on investment (RoI), and different metrics with wellness.”
From Carrete’s perspective, embedding wellness across an organization, rather than within a single department, will also be essential to its continued evolution. “[This is] how I see the function evolving in the future,” he said. “I see a wellness officer that has different champions in different departments, almost like a steering committee of wellness that has different representatives, because each function has different needs.” As to why Carrete believes this is necessary, he said, “We need to make sure that we optimize every resource possible, and wellness is the resource that we all have in common.”
