Azerbaijan Gets Nod to Host COP29 Climate Summit
The UAE, the world’s seventh-largest oil producer, was the host of this year’s COP28.
The oil-rich nation of Azerbaijan will host the COP29 climate conference in 2024 after Eastern European nations broke a political impasse on December 9th.[1]
However, the 23-nation Eastern European group supported Azerbaijan during a meeting on Saturday, according to Bulgarian Environment Minister Julian Popov, who spoke to POLITICO after Armenia and Bulgaria formally withdrew their bids earlier this week.
Azerbaijan's minister of ecology and natural resources, Mukhtar Babayev, declared in a speech that he was "delighted" to report that Azerbaijan's candidacy to host COP29 had garnered general support.
The full COP plenary will still need to vote on Baku's bid, but that is merely a formality.
If confirmed, next year’s summit will once again take place in a major oil- and gas-producing country.
