In a post on X, Karpathy highlighted the challenges in education, particularly the shortage of passionate, effective, and patient subject matter experts fluent in multiple languages. He suggested that advancements in generative AI could allow educators to significantly expand their reach.
Karpathy proposed a model where teachers design class materials, which are then enhanced and scaled by a generative AI-powered teaching assistant to guide students through the course.

Karpathy is known for his detailed YouTube videos explaining language models and his role in designing Stanford University's first deep-learning class. He described Eureka Labs' initial course, "LLM101n," as an AI course that guides students through training their own AI. While the materials will be available online, Karpathy plans to offer in-person classes as well.
Karpathy stated that Eureka Labs represents the culmination of his two-decade-long passion for AI and education. He explained that the name "Eureka Labs" reflects his goal of helping everyone experience the "eureka" moment of understanding, adding "Labs" because "Eureka" alone was already taken and he had always envisioned having a lab.
