OpenAI Launches o1-Preview with Advanced Reasoning
The o1-preview model is now available in ChatGPT and the API.
OpenAI has introduced a new series of AI models, named o1, known internally as “Strawberry”. This update focuses on improving the reasoning abilities of AI models, enabling them to handle complex tasks in science, coding, and math more effectively than previous versions.[1]

The o1-preview model is now available in ChatGPT and the API. It is designed to spend more time analyzing problems before responding, similar to human reasoning. This approach has led to significant improvements in tasks such as physics, chemistry, biology, math, and coding. For instance, the o1-preview model outperformed GPT-4o in a qualifying exam for the International Mathematics Olympiad, solving 83% of problems compared to GPT-4o's 13%. It also ranked in the 89th percentile in Codeforces coding contests.
This initial release does not yet include features such as web browsing or file uploads, but OpenAI plans to integrate these capabilities in future updates. The company has also introduced o1-mini, a faster and more cost-effective model, particularly efficient for coding tasks.
OpenAI has implemented new safety measures for these models, including improved adherence to safety rules and alignment guidelines. The o1-preview model has shown better performance in safety tests compared to previous models.
ChatGPT Plus and Team users can access both o1-preview and o1-mini starting today, with rate limits of 30 messages for o1-preview and 50 for o1-mini. ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu users will gain access next week. Developers in API usage tier 5 can begin using both models with a rate limit of 20 requests per minute. Further updates and enhancements are planned, including increased rate limits and additional features.
For more information, users can refer to the API documentation and follow OpenAI’s updates on the development of these models.
OpenAI is in discussions to raise $6.5 billion in a new funding round that could boost its valuation to $150 billion, anonymous sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. This figure marks a significant jump from the company's $86 billion valuation in its previous tender offer earlier this year, positioning OpenAI as one of the world’s most valuable startups.
