OpenAI has introduced a new advanced voice feature for its popular chatbot, ChatGPT, available for premium subscribers. This feature allows users to engage in more fluid voice conversations.

However, the rollout is not global just yet. OpenAI noted that the voice feature will not be available in European Union (EU) countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, or the UK during this phase. Despite these regional restrictions, the feature is expected to reach a broader audience gradually.
OpenAI first announced this new voice capability in May. The initial buzz was largely centered on the voice option called "Sky," which reportedly resembled Scarlett Johansson’s voice from the 2013 film Her. The similarity led to legal action, with Johansson’s legal team sending a letter to OpenAI, prompting the company to pause using this voice. Since then, users have had access to alternative voices on the free version, but the advanced voice mode now brings enhanced responsiveness and user customization options.
The premium voice feature includes nine distinct voices to choose from, and users can further personalize their experience by tweaking instructions in the app’s customization settings. One of the benefits of the advanced mode is its ability to stop speaking and listen when a user interrupts, creating a more natural conversational flow.
Sam Altman, OpenAI’s co-founder and CEO, acknowledged the delay in rolling out the feature but expressed confidence that users will appreciate the wait. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he said, "Hope you think it was worth the wait."

The release of this voice feature comes at a time when OpenAI is facing increasing competition in the AI space. Google has been rolling out its Gemini Live voice feature for Android users, while Meta is set to release celebrity voices across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, continues to lead in the generative AI market, having launched ChatGPT in 2022. As of August, the chatbot boasted over 200 million weekly active users. The new advanced voice feature is available exclusively for subscribers to OpenAI’s Plus, Team, or Enterprise plans, with the lowest-tier plan starting at $20 per month.
For those interested in using the new voice feature, getting started is simple. Users should ensure they have the latest version of the ChatGPT app installed on their devices. Once OpenAI enables the feature, users will receive a notification in the app. From there, they can open a new chat, tap the sound wave icon, and start a conversation.
Although the new mode offers enhanced voice interaction, it comes with some limitations. Users are restricted to about 30 minutes of voice chat at a time, after which a countdown will appear, notifying users of the remaining available minutes.
OpenAI has not yet provided further details about the time limits.
OpenAI is in discussions to raise $6.5 billion in a new funding round that could boost its valuation to $150 billion, anonymous sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. This figure marks a significant jump from the company's $86 billion valuation in its previous tender offer earlier this year, positioning OpenAI as one of the world’s most valuable startups.
