Abdoul Aziz Wane, a national of Senegal, has been appointed as the first director of the regional office.
Wane has held several leadership positions in the IMF and has a wide-reaching network spanning policymakers and academics globally.
The inauguration of the IMF regional office coincides with a two-day conference organized jointly by the IMF and Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Finance, scheduled for April 24–25 in Riyadh.
This event serves as a platform to launch the office's operations and focuses on reviewing key principles of industrial policy, drawing insights from successes and setbacks observed in other regions, notably the Asian miracles.
In a statement released on its website, the IMF said the move aims to “enhance the partnership with countries in the Middle East and beyond.”
“The new office will scale up capacity building, regional surveillance, and outreach to promote stability, growth, and regional integration,” the statement said.
