The UAE Launches Artificial Intelligence And Data Authority Under New Federal Framework
The new authority, chaired by HE Omar Sultan Al Olama, consolidates the UAE's artificial intelligence, digital government, and data functions under a single federal entity.
The UAE has launched the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Authority, a new federal entity that will oversee the country's AI, data, and digital government initiatives under a single framework, as the government moves to consolidate several digital functions into one organization.
The authority, which was approved by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, will report directly to the Cabinet, and will be chaired by HE Minister Omar Sultan Al Olama. The Artificial Intelligence and Data Authority will assume responsibilities previously held by the Office of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications, the Digital Government Sector at the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, and the UAE Data Office.
A key part of the authority's mandate is aligning national priorities to support an agentic AI-powered digital government, while developing policies, legislation, and strategies across the sector. It will also lead the implementation of the UAE's AI strategy, oversee government data platforms, manage the quality and sharing of government data, and support efforts to increase the digital economy's contribution to gross domestic product (GDP).
In a statement released on Sunday, Sheikh Mohammed said, "Today we approved the establishment of the AI and Data Authority, the single national body responsible for data, AI, and digital government in the UAE, reporting directly to the Cabinet. Omar Sultan Al Olama will lead the Authority. Our goal is a government that is faster, smarter, and always one step ahead, one that uses technology to serve people and build a better future for the next generation."
He added, "We are building the government of the future. A government that runs on data and agentic AI. One that decides faster, delivers better, and never stops improving. A government built around people, not paperwork."
The new authority is set to oversee the development of AI-powered national data platforms designed to support government decision-making. It will also be responsible for designing and delivering integrated digital services, with a focus on creating more seamless interactions between individuals and government entities.
Beyond its operational role, the authority will establish standards and guidelines governing AI, data management, digital transformation, and government services. It will also monitor compliance across federal entities and support the development of national capabilities through research, technical advisory services, and capacity-building initiatives.
The authority's mandate also includes supporting cybersecurity and government information security efforts, as well as expanding international cooperation in AI, data, and digital government.
