As the chief innovation officer at the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), the UAE’s cutting-edge scientific research center, Dr. Chaouki Kasmi is at the helm of one of the region’s most ambitious organizations.

In his role, he oversees the institute’s innovation pipeline, with an eye on partnerships that can help it advance new technologies. More specifically, his work centers around developing artificial intelligence (AI)-driven methods to detect and counter information technology (IT) vulnerabilities that are at risk of electromagnetic espionage. Through this, Dr. Kasmi aims to establish the GCC as a global leader in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) innovation and resilience.

“The GCC is uniquely positioned to be a global leader in the tech landscape, thanks to its strategic investments in cutting-edge infrastructure and research and development (R&D) capabilities,” he says. “At TII’s Directed Energy Research Center, we have built state-of-the-art qualification labs that are currently unparalleled in the region. These facilities allow for rapid prototyping, iterative innovation, and the qualification of new technologies.”

Having built his career in advanced research capabilities, and with over 200 scientific papers under his belt, including in the fields of high energy physics, electromagnetic technologies, innovative radar and sensing systems, laser technologies, and acoustic devices, Dr. Kasmi specializes in unintentional and intentional electromagnetic interference, detection systems, device testing, statistical electromagnetics, computational electromagnetics, and signal processing. Today, he draws on his deep expertise to bridge science and business.

“The Directed Energy Research Center at the TII was established to advance R&D and engineering services in the critical field of electromagnetic security,” Dr. Kasmi says. “Our goal has always been to bridge the gap between innovation and practical application by integrating certification requirements early in the development process. This ensures that new technologies are ready for commercialization and practical deployment.”

From a personal standpoint, Dr. Kasmi perceives his current role as both a contributor and an enabler to the broader innovation ecosystem, with the greater aim of accelerating economic growth. “What excites me most about the future is how these technologies can enable innovators to address critical security challenges, while simultaneously developing transformative solutions,” he says. “Our dual focus on creating our own products and empowering others to innovate positions us as both contributors and enablers in the broader ecosystem. Looking ahead, these advancements have the potential to drive significant economic growth by enhancing security, enabling new markets, and fostering a thriving innovation culture.”
