Ali AlSaidi has been captivated by the potential of technology and hardware to interact with the world – and shape it as well – ever since he was a teenager aged 19.

Now, as the head of the Internet of Things (IoT) at UAE-headquartered energy analytics company Amp, AlSaidi channels his passion into creating tech-powered solutions that promote sustainability and reduce carbon footprints.

Indeed, he’s the visionary IoT engineer behind the Powerlink Go, the UAE’s first locally developed AMI 2.0 (i.e. the latest evolution of advanced metering infrastructure, or AMI) energy analytics device, a groundbreaking innovation that combines real-time equipment-level monitoring with seamless IoT integration to transform energy management in the GCC.

“What excites me most about my work on the Powerlink Go smart meter is its potential to empower individuals and businesses to better understand their energy consumption,” AlSaidi says. “These insights at scale can help prevent potential energy crises, and encourage more sustainable practices.”

Here, AlSaidi highlights the fact that Amp’s innovation has already achieved measurable success in driving energy efficiency and sustainability. “To date, we have saved approximately 15 percent in energy consumption for clients, directly reducing operational costs and environmental impact,” AlSaidi shares. “Additionally, we have digitized over 1,000 assets across the UAE and KSA, transforming energy management for businesses and facilities. These outcomes demonstrate the scalability and effectiveness of our solution in advancing energy efficiency at a regional level.”

Such results bode well for the company’s offerings in the long term, AlSaidi adds. “The future of technology in energy analytics within the GCC will focus on artificial intelligence (AI)-driven insights, IoT integration, and scalability to meet the region’s growing energy efficiency needs,” he says. “Advanced metering systems like AMI 2.0 will become standard, enabling real-time data collection, predictive maintenance, and smarter grid management. Digital twins of buildings and assets will further optimize energy usage, while increased adoption of renewables and electric vehicle infrastructure will demand seamless integration.”

A Playbook For Success: Ali AlSaidi

Given the investment that GCC countries are putting into tech, what role do you think the region will play in the global landscape for it in the future?

“I believe the world is increasingly seeking products that challenge traditional beliefs about sustainability. The GCC region is poised to lead in this arena, as it invests heavily in innovation, solution production, and creating sustainable environments. With its commitment to technological advancement, the GCC will play a pivotal role in shaping the global landscape, driving change, and promoting sustainable practices across various sectors.”

What advice would you give to young people/new businesses looking to start/grow in your field/industry?

“My advice is that the market is still in its early stages, so don’t miss out on the opportunities available. Success often hinges on strong leadership, and remember, nothing is impossible if you stay committed. Achievements require effort, so be prepared to work hard, and stay focused on your goals.”
