The GCC’s Tech Vanguard: Meta's Fares Akkad
The Managing Director for the MENA at Meta was one of the 30 innovators celebrated in Inc. Arabia's December 2024 special feature, The GCC's Tech Vanguard.
After having worked across four continents of the world, Fares Akkad currently leads Meta – the “social metaverse company” behind apps like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp – in the MENA, with an eye towards addressing the needs of its young population, as well as on integrating technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced messaging tools to empower businesses to engage youth, drive entrepreneurship, and digital commerce.
“The GCC’s future in social media, generative AI, and messaging is thriving, with 70 percent of the population under 30 driving digital adoption,” Akkad points out. “Social media penetration is 98 percent in the UAE, and 80 percent in Saudi Arabia, fueling demand for generative AI innovations like personalized content and Arabic AI tools. Messaging apps dominate, with WhatsApp used by 74 percent of GCC residents, revolutionizing e-commerce and customer engagement. These trends promise rapid growth, job creation, and tech-driven economic diversification.”
In addition to achieving consistent year-on-year growth for Meta, Akkad has spearheaded innovations like AI assistance in Arabic across its platforms, while also championing solutions like WhatsApp for business engagement and conversational commerce. “I’ve always been passionate about technology’s transformative potential to connect people, build communities, and create opportunities,” Akkad says. “At Meta, our solutions are not just about communication – they empower individuals, businesses, and economies to thrive in a digital-first world.”
As such, looking to the future, Akkad believes that technology and innovation will continue to drive growth and unlock new opportunities. “What excites me most about the road ahead is the convergence of immersive technologies like augmented reality and virtual reality, AI, and connectivity advancements. These innovations will redefine how we work, learn, shop, and entertain ourselves. They will also provide unprecedented opportunities for entrepreneurs and industries to scale, contribute to gross domestic product growth, and solve some of the world’s pressing challenges. The possibilities for driving inclusion, sustainability, and economic development are truly limitless.”
