Meta to Begin Labelling AI-generated Content in May
This move is aimed at addressing concerns about manipulated media and increasing transparency for users.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced plans to expand the labelling of video, audio, and image content created with artificial intelligence (AI) on its platforms, starting in May. This move is aimed at addressing concerns about manipulated media and increasing transparency for users.[1]
The decision to implement this new policy comes in response to feedback from Meta's independent Oversight Board, which recommended updates to the current approach to handling manipulated media.
"We are making changes to the way we handle manipulated media based on feedback from the Oversight Board and our policy review process with public opinion surveys and expert consultations," Meta's Vice President of Content Policy, Monika Bickert, stated in an official blog post.
Under the new policy, content will be labeled "Made with AI" through various means, including self-disclosure by users when they upload content, advice from fact-checkers, or detection of invisible markers indicating AI-generated content by Meta's systems.
"We will begin labelling a wider range of video, audio, and image content as 'Made with AI' when we detect industry standard AI image indicators or when people disclose that they're uploading AI-generated content," Bickert explained.
The company also emphasized the use of realistic AI-generated tools for creating content like audio and photos, acknowledging the rapid evolution of this technology.
"In the last four years, and particularly in the last year, people have developed other kinds of realistic AI-generated content like audio and photos, and this technology is quickly evolving. As the Board noted, it's equally important to address manipulation that shows a person doing something they didn't do," Bickert added.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns about the potential misuse of AI-generated content, particularly in the context of elections.
