Apple, Meta Not in Talks for AI Partnership: Bloomberg
The Wall Street Journal initially reported the news of the brief talks on June 23rd.
Apple has rejected Meta Platforms' proposal to integrate its AI chatbot, Llama, into iPhones. People in the know told Bloomberg that the companies are not currently in talks for an AI partnership, and only held brief discussions in March.[1]
These preliminary discussions did not advance to a formal stage. Apple reportedly declined to integrate Llama due to concerns over Meta's privacy practices.
The talks occurred around the time Apple was negotiating deals to incorporate OpenAI's ChatGPT and Alphabet's Gemini into its products.

This announcement follows Apple's recent agreement with OpenAI. Under this agreement, Siri will be able to access OpenAI’s ChatGPT in a major improvement, making suggestions or even generating content such as bedtime stories with images. This feature will be free for the users and will not require any account creation, thereby keeping the users' data private. Siri will also be enhanced in real-time statement correction as well as being more integrated with Apple operating systems.
Apple and OpenAI’s agreement was announced during Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, where Apple introduced its new updates.
They included Apple Intelligence, which is an AI system for Mac, iPhone, and iPad. This platform is expected to offer individualized and privacy-preserving functions, including contexts, notifications, writing and rewriting services, and image synthesis. Apple Intelligence should be able to execute multiple applications and leverage what cloud-based models provide while being secure about the users’ data.
In early June, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, mentioned the company's interest in integrating capabilities from Google's generative AI system, Gemini, into its devices.
Apple also introduced new features for AirPods: head motion detection for call control and voice isolation. New features of tvOS are improved audio, support for projectors, and additional screensaver options.
