DCT Abu Dhabi Unveils Carbon Calculator
All hotels in Abu Dhabi are mandated to utilize the Carbon Calculator and submit their consumption data.
The Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) announced the launch of its Carbon Calculator. This tool, tailor-made for the hospitality sector, is poised to help hotels across the emirate track and quantify their carbon emissions, particularly in energy and water usage.[1]
Aligned with the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative, the Carbon Calculator is set to significantly reduce the industry's carbon footprint over time. It was developed in collaboration with representatives from the hotel industry and key government stakeholders such as the Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD) and the Department of Energy of Abu Dhabi (DoE).
The calculator has the ability to convert diverse consumption data—ranging from fuel and gas to electricity and water—into a standardized unit of measurement (kgCO2e). This standardized approach enables comprehensive industry-wide analysis, allowing DCT Abu Dhabi to identify top-performing hotels and support others in gradually reducing emissions.
It serves as a blueprint for broader carbon footprint accounting in the tourism industry, with potential applications across various sectors, including events, cultural sites, and entertainment attractions.
All hotels in Abu Dhabi are mandated to utilize the Carbon Calculator and submit their consumption data through https://www.carboncalculator.dct.gov.ae. Monthly reporting requirements ensure consistent monitoring and progress tracking, while dynamic dashboards offer hotels invaluable insights to guide sustainability efforts effectively.
