MBZUAI Hosts AI Summer School Promoting Sustainable AI
MBZUAI's summer school familiarizes UAE students with AI's capacity to contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Thirty-eight 11th-grade students from various parts of the UAE gained insight into the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) and potential career paths in the field during the inaugural summer school at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in Masdar City last week.
At the MBZUAI Summer School, students were motivated to enhance their entrepreneurial and teamwork skills through a group project focused on AI and sustainability. They concluded by presenting their ideas to a panel of professionals on how AI could contribute to selected United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The five-day pilot program received over 230 applications, demonstrating strong interest in future STEM study opportunities, especially in AI. Chosen participants from 23 schools received exposure to various AI domains such as film and music production, application development, generative AI (GenAI), and ethical AI practices.
The summer school group comprised 24 females and 14 males from three different nationalities, including 36 Emiratis. All participants expressed interest in pursuing undergraduate degrees in computer science and were enthusiastic about exploring real-world applications of AI.
