Gamechangers: AI | ASPIRE’s Stephane Timpano On How The MENA Can Help Shape Global Standards For AI Deployment
Timpano was one of the innovators celebrated in the 2026 edition of Gamechangers: AI, an annual Inc. Arabia showcase of the business leaders driving the AI revolution in the MENA.
ASPIRE is the technology program management pillar of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), and as its CEO, Stephane Timpano’s work revolves around bridging the gap between breakthrough research and real-world deployment of future transformative technologies.
“We identify real industry problems, convene global research talent, validate solutions under measurable conditions, and transition them toward deployment,” Timpano explains. “One of the most visible examples of this model is A2RL, the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, which we use as a structured testbed for high-performance autonomy. In our inaugural car race, more than 10,000 spectators attended in person, with over one million global streaming views. In Season 2, artificial intelligence (AI) closed the performance gap to a professional human racing driver to just 1.58 seconds, demonstrating tangible year-on-year improvement in real-time autonomous decision-making. In the drone championship, an AI-powered drone outpaced a world-class human pilot in a live AI-versus-human race, marking a breakthrough in autonomous flight validation. These milestones are not just about sport. They are about measurable performance, accelerated research and development (R&D) cycles, and public trust.”
Such efforts also lend credence to Timpano’s belief the MENA region has the potential to become a global proving ground for applied AI. “If we can demonstrate that AI systems are safe, high-performing, and ethically governed in complex domains such as mobility, energy, and robotics, the region will help shape global standards for deployment,” he predicts. “Our role will not be limited to developing models. It will extend to validating systems, influencing governance frameworks, and accelerating commercialization pathways. By aligning R&D institutions, industry stakeholders, and policymakers, we can move faster from concept to deployment than many legacy ecosystems.”
