Android Introduces Theft Detection Lock Feature
This feature was part of a package of updates announced by Google at its IO 2024 developer conference.
Some Android users have begun receiving a new Theft Detection Lock service that automatically locks a smartphone's screen when it detects potential theft. The feature utilizes data from phone sensors, such as the Accelerometer and Gyroscope, to determine if a phone is being forcibly taken, whether by a thief running away or escaping on a motorcycle or car.[1]

Once theft is detected, the Android operating system activates the screen lock, securing the user's data and apps to prevent unauthorized access.
The Theft Detection Lock feature is currently being rolled out to Android phones in Brazil, with a gradual global release expected soon. The service will first be available to devices running Android 10 and newer versions.
This feature was part of a package of updates announced by Google at its IO 2024 developer conference, with the company promising full availability by the end of this year. However, some features will be exclusive to Android 15 users.
